Ponce is the city and municipality well regarded for its preservation of buildings in the Ponce Creole architectural style. Ponce was named after Juan Ponce de León y Loayza (son of Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León). One of the biggest events in Ponce is the Carnaval Ponceño (Ponce Carnival). The earliest celebration occured on 1858, where José de la Guardia organized a masquerade dance. Somewhere in the 1950s, municipal government added the parade to the Carnival, making it the Ponce Carnival celebrated today. The Carnival is celebrated from a medival Spanish story of the Moors vanquished by Saint James. As Ponce is the host of the Carnival, many Puerto Ricans create their vejigante masks locally. Many Puerto Ricans attend the Ponce Carnival, so visitors are sure to see active culture at Ponce.
